The Change We Seek: Minnesota's New Action Plan To Prevent and End Homelessness

Through a robust, collaborative effort with communities across the state, the Minnesota Office to Prevent and End Homelessness developed a statewide action plan to end homelessness aligned with the federal criteria and benchmarks.
Eric Grumdahl and Cathy ten Broeke of the Minnesota Office to Prevent and End Homelessness discuss the plan, which was released earlier this week.

A recent report by the Center for Social Innovation sheds light on the overwhelming racial inequities in homelessness. The report, part of Supporting Partnerships for AntiRacist Communities (SPARC), finds dramatically higher rates of homelessness among people of color. It also explores racial inequality in key areas related to homelessness: economic mobility, housing, criminal justice, behavioral health, and family stabilization.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s “The Gap: The Affordable Housing Gap Analysis” the United States has a shortage of  more than 7.2 million affordable homes available to households with income at or below the poverty line. The report finds that every major metropolitan area in the U.S. has a shortage of “affordable and available” rental homes for this population—and even areas with the greatest availability still have a significant shortage.

The Alliance will be hiring 2-3 full-time interns for Summer 2018 at its Washington, D.C. office. Prospective candidates should be pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a relevant area of study. Interns will assist in projects across the communications, development, and policy teams, as well as support efforts around the Alliance’s National Conference and Capitol Hill day in July. Candidates should indicate which of those areas are of most interest to them and should describe the experience and skills they would bring to projects in those interest areas.
