ISSUE BRIEF:
Family Homelessness and Family Separation
8c143745-a9c3-41fc-8bfe-f199638ae6a7.png
According to a new issue brief by the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE), family separation is related to homelessness and housing instability. The report, which analyzed data from the Family Options Study, found that nearly one third (30 percent) of families entering shelter were separated from at least one family member. Families that continued to experience housing instability were more likely than other formerly homeless families to be separated from a child 20 months after initial shelter entry.

Finding new properties for housing placements can be challenging and time consuming.  A new HUD Exchange resource helps you to see newly-listed buildings and/or land across the country that HUD has determined are suitable and available to assist persons experiencing homelessness.  Click on the flag(s) in each state to display the property's characteristics and access a Google image of the property (if applicable). Then, contact the landholding agency listed in the applicable Suitability Determination Listing for more information.

Written by Guest blogger, Joshua Bamberger, MD, MPH, University of California, San Francisco; Chief Medical Consultant at Mercy Housing In recent months, the intense healthcare debate has often centered around our individual values: how much autonomy should we have to control our healthcare finances? How do we meet our responsibility to care for people who live […]

Every day vulnerable people fleeing domestic violence are denied shelter.  It's not because they don't need it or because they are ineligible. It is simply because there is no room. Domestic violence programs are designed to provide safe refuge and support to people escaping violence.  Some require the safety of a crisis housing program for […]
