Upcoming: Spotlight Webinar Series on Homelessness among American Indians and Alaska Natives

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Homeless and Housing Resource Network (HHRN) will present the Spotlight Series, a series of webinars on the crisis of homelessness among American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/ANs).
National data indicate that AI/ANs account for a disproportionate share of the population experiencing homelessness. In urban centers alone, AI/ANs experience homelessness at rates at least double what might be expected given the demographic representation suggested by the U.S. Census. In rural and tribal areas, the extent of homelessness among AI/ANs is difficult to determine due to logistical and cultural factors.
The AI/AN story is one of resiliency and survival, despite exposure to decades of social injustices perpetuated across the generations, which have had enduring consequences that contribute to a range of issues. Adverse childhood experiences and traumatic events experienced historically and inter-generationally may be reflected in high rates of interpersonal violence, behavioral health problems including depressive symptoms (depression and unresolved grief and loss), substance use (alcohol and illicit drugs), and suicide.
SAMHSA is committed to providing appropriate resources for AI/ANs at risk of or experiencing homelessness, particularly those living with behavioral health issues. The Spotlight Series is designed to inform providers of homeless services, tribal communities, and tribal/local/state decision-makers. The Spotlight Series will include some of the most respected professionals in the country, who will speak from experience about what is needed and what works.
