Community Reentry for Justice Involved Individuals

Community Reentry for Justice Involved Individuals includes activities conducted to prepare an offender to return safely to the community and live as a law-abiding citizen. This webinar will introduce three presenters who were formerly incarcerated and discuss the rehabilitation programs they took advantage of during their incarceration and upon their release. Presenters will also describe strategies they utilized to overcome the barriers and challenges facing individuals exiting the criminal justice system and returning to communities.

Webinar Highlights

Participants will learn about the barriers, challenges, and successes of community reentry for justice-involved individuals and will interact with them in a virtual Adobe Connect environment. Participants will gain knowledge and strategies for addressing the challenges facing community reentry for justice-involved individuals as they re-enter the community.

Objectives

  • Identify the complex issues faced by community reentry for justice-involved individuals.
     
  • Relay information about strategies, innovations, and successful solutions that are being implemented in communities.
     
  • Identify concrete information and solutions for meeting the needs of people who have been successfully reintegrated into their communities.

Moderators

  • Matthew Clune (HHRN) will moderate this webinar.

Presenters

  • Melvin Lester is currently a certified peer support specialist, and he works with clients applying for government assistance to help with their reintegration back into society and with enrolling them into general education and college programs. He has conducted coordination of care with local hospitals, as well as crisis planning.
     
  • Deborah Monroe is currently the chief executive officer/owner of Recovery Concepts, located in Madison Heights, Michigan, where she oversees employees providing peer services, including facilitation of person-centered plans, developing recovery-based goals and objectives, assistance in staffing of crisis programs, providing Wellness Recovery Action Plan® (WRAP) groups, and developing wellness plans. Ms. Monroe has been a certified peer specialist and has training and certifications as an advance level WRAP facilitator and Mental Health First Aid youth trainer, as well as certifications in Motivational Interviewing, trauma-informed care (TIC), recovery coaching, Personal Action Toward Health (PATH), e-CPR, and Whole Health Action Management (WHAM).
     
  • Luis QuiƱones is a care manager for the New York State Department of Corrections liaison, where he works closely with persons soon to be released from correctional facilities, conducts an initial intake/care plan of service to be performed upon release, links formerly incarcerated people to medical and social service needs, and liaises with community-based agencies to assist persons with maximum care. Mr. QuiƱones has volunteer experience as an HIV community educator coordinator with the New York State Department of Corrections.
