Upcoming: Identifying and Addressing Homelessness Consumer Voices Webinar – October 29, 2015 - 2 PM EDT

Webinar Announcement:
SAMHSA's Homeless and Housing Resource Network (HHRN) presents:
Identifying and Addressing Homelessness Consumer Voices Series
Thursday, October 29, 2015
2:00 – 3:30 PM EDT
Despite the gains of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Questioning – Two Spirit (LGBTQ-2), in the area of civil rights, there is still a need to understand and develop strategies to combat the discrimination/prejudice from those who oppose the LGBTQ-2 community. A study released by a broad coalition of research and advocacy organizations reports that LGBTQ-2 women are among the most at risk of poverty in the United States. Lesbians of color are at least twice as likely to be poor. Transgender women are nearly four times as likely to have annual incomes of $10,000 or less.
SAMHSA’s HHRN Consumer Voices Series will consist of three webinar sessions where participants will have the opportunity to learn about the barriers, challenges, and successes of LGBTQ-2 individuals and to interact with their LGBTQ-2 peers in a virtual Adobe Connect environment. Through this series, participants will gain knowledge and strategies for addressing discrimination toward the LGBTQ-2 community.
The first webinar in the series will focus on barriers of LGBTQ-2, including employment discrimination, homelessness, healthcare, workplace barriers, and mental health issues. The webinar will also focus on successes that the LGBTQ community has gained along the lines of marriage equality, decrease of stigma, and general acceptance from communities. The webinar will be open to SAMHSA’s homeless programs grantees, individuals with lived-experiences, Grant Program Directors, and Statewide Consumer Network grantees; with extended invitations distributed through the HHRN, Bringing Recovery Supports to Scale Technical Assistance Center Strategy (BRSS TACS), the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) email lists.
Objectives:
  • Identify the complex issues faced by individuals who are experiencing homelessness and have behavioral health disorders

  • Relate information about strategies, innovations, and successful solutions that are being implemented in several communities

  • Identify concrete information and solutions for meeting the needs of individuals with histories of housing instability and behavioral health conditions
