Today at 2 p.m. Eastern, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Ranking Member of the Committee on Financial Services, is hosting a public briefing on homelessness in America.

Panelists include Matthew Doherty, USICH Executive Director, Jennifer Ho, Sr. Advisor on Housing and Services at HUD, Nan Roman, President and CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness, and actor and philanthropist Richard Gere. 
The discussion will include an update on the progress being made nationally and in communities across the country and on strategies and resources needed to achieve the goals of Opening Doors.

Connecting People to Employment, 6 Resources to Know


Meaningful and sustainable jobs, coupled with housing, are key to providing people with successful paths out of homelessness. In honor of Labor Day, we hope communities will bring increased focus to the employment strategies outlined in Objective 5 of Opening Doors. 
Our team's Peter Nicewicz compiled six resources from USICH and our partners to accelerate the work of connecting people experiencing homelessness - and people who have exited homelessness - to meaningful and sustainable jobs.  
Use These Strategies to Link People to SSI/SSDI Benefits 

The Social Security Administration's Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance programs can provide critical income supports to people with disabilities as they transition to stable housing out of homelessness. Many people experiencing homelessness, however, face barriers to accessing those benefits.
  
USICH's Lindsay Knotts details how your community's homelessness services system can use key strategies to help people overcome hurdles to receiving these critical benefits.
Coordinated Services in Philadelphia Help Veterans Get Back on Their Feet

Army Veteran Thomas Green struggled with homelessness for 20 years. With the coordinated assistance of VA programs, Mr. Green now has stable housing in the Veterans Multi-Service Center's Shelter Plus Care Program.
