Workshop on Lessons Learned From Diverse Efforts To Change Social Norms
March 18, 2015 | 8:30 a.m.–4:45 p.m. Eastern Time
Keck Center of the National Academies
The National Research Council’s Board on Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences has convened an expert committee that will host a 1-day workshop on Lessons Learned From Diverse Efforts To Change Social Norms.
The workshop will help SAMHSA plan communications strategies to change social norms and attitudes related to behavioral health disorders. The workshop will explore lessons learned from previous media, communication, and outreach campaigns to change attitudes and behaviors in public health or other arenas.
Workshop participants will explore the design and outcomes of these campaigns, including message development, platforms used for message delivery, targeted audiences, dose of the intervention (messaging), and related incentives. In discussions, participants will examine the campaigns in terms of their attention to social determinants, degree of contact, and outcomes related to social inclusion, stakeholder engagement, and the sustainability of changes in social norms.
