| Sign Organizational Sign-On Letter for Non-Defense Discretionary Funding |
The Alliance, along with its national partners, is circulating an organizational sign-on letter urging lawmakers to replace sequestration with a balanced approach to deficit reduction that does not disproportionately hurt non-defense discretionary (NDD) programs. This broad array of programs includes homeless assistance and affordable housing programs, as well as community development, job training, public health, national park, and scientific research programs, among others. Sign on today to prevent unfair budget caps and sequestration from taking place in fiscal year (FY) 2016. Sequestration cuts in FY 2016 would reduce the capacity of HUD programs and have devastating impacts on the vulnerable people they serve, and would be a major impediment in our work to end homelessness in America.

Here's Why It Matters:
NDD programs, including homeless assistance programs, have already been disproportionately hurt by budget cuts in recent years, even though experts across the political spectrum agree that these programs aren't a driving factor behind our nation's mid- and long-term fiscal challenges.
The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Grants program suffered over a 5 percent cut due to sequestration in FY 2013, which was detrimental to many communities' efforts to end homelessness. We cannot afford to further reduce homeless assistance programs' capacities to serve the most vulnerable members of our society. The greater the total pot of NDD spending that is made available for FY 2016, the greater our chances for securing a robust increase for McKinney.
There is bipartisan agreement that sequestration is bad policy and ultimately hurts our nation. With sequestration relief provided by the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013 set to expire at the end of FY 2015, it is extremely important that Members of Congress hear from their constituents NOW about how important it is for sequestration relief to be equally balanced between non-defense and defense programs. It is particularly important that this letter, organized by NDD United, include as many homeless, housing, and community development organizations as possible in order to express our sector's serious concerns about another round of cuts in FY 2016.
