Team USICH Observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Today (Oct. 23, 2014) our team at USICH shows support of #PurpleThursday and domestic violence survivors. We know that if we're going to meet the goal of preventing and ending family homelessness by 2020, we have to consider the impact of domestic violence on families and individuals and the need for a network of housing resources that can be immediately accessed—ensuring safety and stability for survivors.

Ensuring Safety and Stability for Survivors of Domestic Violence | by Jasmine Hayes (@jhayes_2014)
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this year is the 30th anniversary of the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act. Over the past several months, there have been a number of high profile cases involving domestic violence that have garnered significant media attention. The spotlight on these specific experiences has helped to bring a larger discussion to the public arena about domestic violence, including perceptions about perpetrators and survivors, as well as the supports that are an essential part of the network of emergency shelters and supportive services in responding to domestic violence.

We Can Do Better: The Intersection of Domestic Violence and Family Homelessness

Domestic violence is a prevalent issue among women and families with children experiencing homelessness. In this video, USICH Policy Director Jasmine Hayes marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Purple Thursday (October 23, 2014) and the 30th Anniversary of The Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA). Most importantly, she addresses the unmet housing needs of individuals who've experienced domestic violence, leading them to return to their abusers, live in their cars or go without shelter.
