Paul Ryan Introduces Poverty Proposal
On Thursday, July 24, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) offered his new anti-poverty proposal in a speech at the American Enterprise Institute. The proposed poverty reform, titled "Expanding Opportunity in America," proposes to consolidate 11 federal poverty programs, including the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program, Public Housing, Temporary Aid for Needy Families, and the Community Development Block Grant, in addition to granting states more authority to set eligibility requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, housing assistance programs, and others. The plan would also make adjustments to the Earned Income Tax Credit. The proposal is estimated to cost $799 billion, and although it appears on the surface to be budget neutral, many analysts believe that it would likely result in significant reductions in spending for anti-poverty programs over time.

In this post, we introduce a new feature of our "Ending Veteran Homelessness" interactive map tracking the cities where mayors and other local government officials have signed onto the challenge.
